While it is possible to create a beautiful garden without a bunch of expensive equipment, having the right gardening tools can be an amazing time saver. Sure you can dig holes with only your hands but why would you do choose to do that when you can use a hand trowel for the same task? The fact is this: having the right tools will help you do your job.
Many new gardeners say that figuring out which tools they really need is difficult. These are just a few of the more important tools to have on hand if you want to grow an awesome garden.
Every single gardener, no matter how much experience he or she has, needs a sturdy pair of gardening gloves. Gardening gloves help protect your hands as you work in the dirt and with the plants. You might enjoy the feeling of digging in the dirt with non-gloved hands but gloves will help keep your hands safe and clean while you work. One example of this is the rosebush: wearing gardening gloves will help keep your hands safe from the sharp thorns that stick out of rose stems.
Compost and fertilizers are two substances that you never want to touch with your bare hands-make sure you wear your gloves for protection! If you are squeamish about bugs and creepy crawlies your gardening gloves give you protection against them.
Kneelers are also a good idea. Most gardening involves spending a lot of time crouching or on your hands and needs. Garden kneelers can easily be constructed from spare pieces of Styrofoam or other cushy materials-anything to provide a soft barrier between your knees and the ground. Gardening mats are also available for purchase if you don't want to make your own. Kneelers protect your knees while you are gardening. They can also do a great deal to protect your clothing from the wear and tear that comes from gardening.
A big rake. Use a garden rake on smaller patches of land. On the other hand, some gardeners have quite large gardens to tend and a big rake helps with this. You can do more than gather leaves with a rake. You can use your rake to smooth and turn soil when you are doing your garden prep. You can also use the other side of the rake to smooth out the dirt on the top of your garden. The rake you use to gather leaves will be made from plastic. Garden rakes are usually made out of steel-even the full sized rakes.
Gardening is a hobby that a lot of people find relaxing. Many people say that the act of "playing in the dirt" is soothing and helps calm jangled nerves. New gardeners often learn their hobby using just their hands. When some time has passed these gardeners often find that using gardening tools is easier than they thought it would be. If you give it enough time your gardening tools could start to feel like extensions of your own hands and arms. If you put in enough time and effort using gardening tools will start to feel completely natural. You might even learn that gardening is really fun!
