Cedar roofing is more common amongst new construction then with getting a new roof to replace your old roof. New construction tends to like cedar more for street appeal. Selling a new house has is a better selling feature when cedar sits on the roof as it is pretty. Cedar also looks better when it ages and this is because Cedar roofing can breath at a much better rate than most roofing products out there. When you install a cedar roof it is far easier to ventilate which can be done inadequately when Asphalt is installed. On new construction ten years can pass and suddenly the roof looks a hundred years old.
Cedar shakes made from old growth trees are very difficult to find. New growth is the dominant cedar shake in the Pacific North West where most of the cedar comes from. New growth generally does not last for more than twenty years which is a shake spilt at about five eighths. If you compare that to the life of most asphalt roofing products you can clearly see that two cedar roofs can equal one asphalt roof in a generation or two. Cedar also takes more time to install which means more dollars for the labour intensive production.
Cedar has the ability to slow down running water which heads towards your gutters. This can help over splash that could damage your siding. Asphalt is more resilient against moss growth if you don't live under overhanging trees. Old cedar can fill up your gutters with more than the usual debris, some birds and wild life find untreated cedar tasty
Asphalt is a long lasting product that will work if installed and ventilated according to building code and the specs of the manufacture. It is also more cost effective than cedar and easier to install. If it comes down to cosmetic look than cedar does generally wins. Although there are some asphalt products out there that have made major advances in the design and colour shading.
