This is one of the most common disease which affects a large number of population. It has been seen that Fibromyalgia is more common in females as compared to males. The people between 25-60 years of age are more affected. Now-a-days, large number of children are also affected by this as shown by a survey.
In fibromyalgia, pain is present in the area where muscles is attached to ligament, tendon or bone. Fibromyalgia is much alike arthritis. No bone deformity is seen in fibromyalgia. In this, generally, pain originates in neck or shoulders and move to other parts. The intensity of pain varies depending on the weather change, time of day, stress, body activity etc.
In fibromyalgia there are different kinds of pain. It may be described as aching or stiff pain, or stabbing or burning sensation, or a sudden rise that have radiating nature. Fatigue, sleep disturbances, migraine headaches are some symptoms noted in fibromyalgia. Lack of serotonin may cause these. Important symptoms of the fibromyalgia patients are accounted for diagnosis. Occasionally wrong diagnosis is made with the absence of symptoms to diagnose it as other disease.
Other symptoms taken into consideration are tingling, numbness in extremities, GIT symptoms like irritable bowel syndrome, bladder spasm etc. Painful menstruation is a main problem in females. The patients tend to get constipation or diarrhea. Lowered concentration, depression and alteration of mood are some other common symptoms of fibromyalgia.
The cause of fibromyalgia remains vague. There are certain assumptions and hypothesis which are considered to cause this. Different phenomena are there which have details about the cause. Some says less blood flow to the muscle tissue and in the thalamus along with caudate nucleus may be responsible for pain. Whereas some suggests that the reduction in the serotonin level is the cause. Also abnormal functioning of pain processing pathways may also be responsible for pain in fibromyalgia.
Two types of fibromyalgia is present. One is Primary and the other is Secondary. Primary in which usually is unknown is said to be idiopathic. But Secondary fibromyalgia has some causes. Secondary may be a result of some diseases like Hepatitis C, Lyme disease, surgery, injures etc.
Fibromyalgia treatment focus on relieving the pain. Certain medicines are prescribed which are targeted to reduce the pain of muscles. In certain cases anti-depressants are also recommended. It is also quite often to give Muscle relaxants like skelaxin etc. Additionally change in lifestyle is recommended. Exercises are essentially the best. This include swimming, cycling, aerobics, yoga etc. However, this all should be done under the expert guidance.
