The condition Asperger's Syndrome has many symptoms that a child could display. If you notice any in your child, there's no reason to panic, as effective treatments are available. Getting a diagnosis as quickly as possible is important, though, because these children need special attention. The symptoms that follow are some of the more common indicators of Asperger's syndrome in children.

One possible sign of Aspergers in a child is an inability to tolerate even the slightest changes in his or her daily schedule or habits. These may be long standing routines or ones that the child has invented. So whether it's what you made for lunch or the time he goes to bed, changes can be quite disruptive to the child. So if you buy them a new pair of shoes they may become very disturbed that the old ones are gone.

While this kind of inflexibility is one symptom of Aspergers, there are other possible reasons why children could have such a problem with change.

A child with Asperger's won't want to take part in the role play or imaginative play that is typical of most children. Most kids naturally enjoy pretending they are someone else, dressing up in costumes or playing games that involve playing various roles, but kids with Aspergers have trouble understanding this kind of play. This can lead to increased difficulty for the child to relate to children his own age and others. This leads to other kids thinking the child with Asperger's is unfriendly or dull. The fact is, they are simply wired differently and have their own interests, so its important to recognize these symptoms and not expect such kids to behave like everyone else.

If a child has Asperger's, they may not like to be touched which can be apparent to the parents starting at a young age. For parents, especially those unfamiliar with the symptoms of Asperger's, this can be very upsetting. Children with Asperger's may have trouble with being touched because it is a high functioning form of autism and typically people with autism don't like to be touched. However, this is not the case in all children with Asperger's who in some cases may touch people in ways that appear strange. They may also stand closer or further away from others than is normal because their sense of personal space is different. It is important to treat each case individually because, as you can see, the symptoms can vary a lot from one person to the next. Understanding the conditionwill make it easier to understand the child. Once you understand them better you will see that they are capable of interacting albeit different from normal kids. If your child has some of the symptoms of Aspergers such as we've been discussing, it's important to seek help so you can come up with the best strategy to deal with it.
