Information Technology or IT as it is commonly known as, refers to the industry which uses computers, software programming, and other electronic equipment to process, store, transmit, protect and retrieve information. The world of IT is vast, especially in today's digital society; and with technology moving at an ever increasing rate, careers are so varied and forever changing.

In order to succeed in IT you need to be proficient in computers and technology and adaptable to change. As the jobs in IT can be so diverse, so too can the level of training and education required. To be successful in any area of IT you need to have IT skills, again, these vary depending on your area of chosen expertise. You also need to be a team player with good communication skills and of course technically minded. Advancement in IT also means you have to be versatile and adept with your skills and knowledge, keeping them up to date and in-line with new technology.

Success in any IT job relies upon the individual. You need to be passionate about your chosen career; otherwise you simply won't have the drive to succeed in it. The IT industry is constantly changing; new technologies are being unveiled every day. Therefore you need to have the passion and interest to keep up with what is happening, not just in your chosen field, but in the industry as a whole. Focus, target a particular job that you are good at and are genuinely interested in and then get the appropriate education and training.

For example if you wanted to pursue a career as a computer programmer you need to have extensive knowledge and experience with computers as well as have people and marketing skills. To become an expert in this field you need a good education in computer programming. Practice and learn whenever and wherever you can. Develop your skills, and learn from others as being a computer programmer will often see you working in teams. Being adaptable and learning other aspects of IT can make you an even more desirable job candidate. Keep up to date with advancements in technology, otherwise you'll soon find your skills out of date, and trying to play catch up in such a fast paced industry will put you behind all the other programmers out there who are also hungry for success!

To be successful in IT, you need to know what you are doing. It's not a profession you can blag your way through. If you can provide expert knowledge and market and demonstrate your skills accordingly you can succeed in a career in IT.
