I have spent over 20 years in the cleaning industry and have finally mastered the carpet cleaning business. I currently run a successful company in Hemet CA. I have written a complete guide, summarized here. I love to share information and secrets on this industry because it is very lucrative if done right. Our business brings in over $100k a year. We made over 55k our first year.
Getting Started
1. Business Name
Creating a name for your business is the very first step. Many companies start with their own name. eg: www.bobscarpetcleaning.com is an example. Names like Green Carpet Cleaning are becoming more popular as we are becoming more aware of the environment. When finding your name, make sure you check to see if the domain is available ( www.johnscarpet.com ). You want to try and get a .com instead of a .net.
2. Licensing
The only license you will need to get started would be a city Business License.
There are other types of certifications that you can get to post on your website and tell potential client?, but it is not necessary.
Getting Incorporated would be a good idea of liability purposes once you reach a good size (maybe 2 or 3 vans). This will help protect you from some liability and also give you special tax benefits. I am not a tax expert, but I have an S •Corp.

3. Determine your market
It is important to figure out what type of market your going to be in for Carpet Cleaning.
A. What is the average income for your market? 60,000? 80,000? 30,000? It will make a huge difference on how much you are going to charge and what type of service your provide. If your target markets make good income, you typically can charge more for your services.
B. Residential or Commercial? Are you going to focus on Residential Cleaning, Commercial Cleaning, or Both? It is a good idea to focus on one primary market, like Residential, when you first get started. This will help you build a big business in one market and become an expert in that market. You can later move to Commercial or Vice Versa, once you dominate your market. Residential is where I would recommend starting because it is easier to get in there and you can typically make more money for the time you spend. It is also much easier to get the jobs. I will cover residential marketing in another section.

4. Pricing
I am going to cover what we currently charge. Your pricing will vary depending on the market your covering. We are in an area where the average income is about $60,000 per year.
Carpet Cleaning •We charge an average of $30.00 per room
For 3 rooms we have a special of $89.00. We always post our specials on the internet and websites that we do advertising on. Our society has grown fond of "coupons" and great deals. Companies like groupon are becoming more and more popular.
5. Marketing.
Internet marketing is the most important thing you can do for your carpet cleaning business. There are many sites where you can post your cleaning business for FREE. One of these sites is MerchantCircle.com. This is a very popular service oriented site which many consumers use to find companies. Judysbook.com is another one. Make sure you find as many free websites to get your name out there.
