Before you begin your plumber training, you need to decide which type of plumber you want to be. Now, the average salary for a residential plumber is $21 an hour. However, there are other types of plumbers as well. Thanks to renewable energy technology, more jobs are opening up for individuals with air and heating experience. You need to do research on the different types of plumbing careers so that you can determine which training program suits your needs the most.
There are some basic skills you will need in order to start plumber training. For instance, you will have to be good at math in order to perform complex measurements. You should also have good communication skills, especially if you live in a bi-lingual area.
With that said, here are a few of your options for plumber training:
- Attend a trade school or community college
- Join the military and receive training as a plumber
- Take an online course
- Get an apprenticeship with a plumbing company
Find out what the requirements are in your area. You will definitely need to take some classes on math, drafting, blueprint reading, welding principles, plumbing codes, and so forth. A full course will last for about three years. Apprenticeship programs last for up to five years, and you can earn money as a trainee. Once again, it's important to decide in which field of plumbing you have an interest so that you can receive direct, specialized training.
After completing your plumber training program or course, you can apply for a certificate or license. Having the appropriate certification or licensing will lead to more opportunities and better paying jobs. Or, if you'd prefer to be self-employed, having a license or certificate will make you appear more trustworthy and responsible. Another consideration is whether or not you'd like to join a plumbers' union in your area.
